Final Version:

( Not in ordered )

This video is to introduce the works I did over the last few weeks.

I first made my original bedroom in a ratio of 1 to one hundred.

I start from drawing down some concept model ideas, and these are what the models look like.

Here are all models I created, I will explain a few of them in detail later in the video.

The body of work which I have constructed for this assignment is entitled “LIGHTING SHAPES” because through exploration and experimentation I find it is very interesting how various factors can affect light to create a different atmosphere.  I was able to create different elements at the early concept model stage relating to the statement, that inspires my later model makings.

The use of the most basic materials, cardboard, wooden toothpick plus different types of paper coupled with cutting and hollow designs bringing lighting into the interior space. And allows me to photograph the interconnections between shapes and light.

As you can see in my first model, I have developed it from this concept model. In both models, I have constructing a simple paper into a geometric shape that has an interesting geometric interior space.

I have made 2 versions of it. I did one with tracing paper and one with the same kraft paper but in a double-size. It is hard to predict how the shapes will be until the model has formed. And resulting in each version has some differences. Tracing paper is good at lighting, however, it is not so good at shaping as it is very hard in folding. So I decide to use the same material as the concept model. - same as paper but can create a more moody feeling. The overall result is very nice, the photo shows a great contrast in interesting rectangular lighting shapes with the interior space.  1:100 ()

Moving onto my second model, which is very different from the first, it goes backs to the use of tracing paper,
I used folding techniques to create the shape and cut out some curved carboards to construct a space where people can use. However, in this concept model, I was only experimenting and did not yet consider lighting. Next time I will try to experiment with this one as well.

Moving onto my second concept model, I have created this one using tracing paper (in the same week with all other concept models. )
This time by using a simple cutting technique I  tried to create an aesthetic hollow design. I have cut off a lot of triangle shapes to enable light shine into the interior space. The photo turns out very nicely by showing the contrast between light and shadows.  (WEEK 6)

The previous concept model then became my inspiration for this model here. I remain the hollow design as it works very well with lighting. And I developed a bit more on curves. Due to the lack of material, I get an idea of using the cup from cup noodle. By showing harmonic connections with the circular cup, I made the roof with curvy linear elements and cut out some spacing to allow lights to shine in. (The material here used to create the roof is a white satin paper which I will get into the details in my last model. ) The hardest part to create this model is to cutting curvey shapes from the cup. It is very hard to cut the cup as it has 2 layers, even though it looks thin but it's very hard to cut. The cardboard layer has an exterior layer of water proved wrapping, and it's inside also have another thick waterproof layer. I have refined the outline by using a surgery knife to cut again and again at one place to cut through the layers. And by making the model looks like a whole, I have painted the wrapping with white paints, even though it took some layering of paints to cover the whole advertisement wrapping, it turns out nicely.

This model inspires me to make the model here,

Moving on to my next model here, this model was constructed by 2 planes that have an interesting circular shape made with cardboard. I then wrap it by tracing paper, I chose tracing paper this time, Because it is semi-transparent with great light transmittance however it's not like the white paper that soft, so it can create smooth curve but remain the shape. I want to make an open but condense roof that can both introducing the light and can still have a closed area. You can see in my model, the linear cutting techniques have worked out really nicely. The challenges I faced in this model making are, (it took some experimentation to find a perfect place of connecting the linear roof. I then photoshop out some tapes that used to regulate the roofing's position. When cutting round shapes out from cardboard, the edges were not always clear. I tidied them up using scissors and a surgery knife.

This concept model here has inspired me my next developed design.

I have used an unusual material- aluminium foil paper. This material is very easy to form a shape and can create many edges and corners textures as I wanted. However, the shape is also very easy to be destroyed.

I have constructed this model with few cubes and a row of poles made from cardboard. I choose the poles as I thought It will be nice when photographing it because it could be creating a nice light & shadow contrast. The hardest part is the poles were not able to handle the weight of the shapes at the top. So I added some cubes at the bottom to support the shape. This model inspires me with this model here.

This 3D model material here also inspired my next model making. I chose a material that is very linear and are great when coming to lighting.

In this last developed model, I have further developed my cutting skills plus considering the lighting area.

White paper I used here is thick white satin paper- paper that used to print photos. This material has similar properties as paper however as it is thicker, it is not as papers that fragile. I have used toothpicks to create an aesthetic linear lighting pattern. As you can see, I photographing my models with a black background as it will keep all the attention on the model itself and not the background. The lighting also presented nicely through this background. This is a more successful model making and I think it is because this is the last model I made and after I have overcome the challenges I have faced before, I come up different ways to solve it.

Also I developed my skills whether in cutting or the suitability in materials.

This model here was also inspired by the foil concept model plus the other concept model I’m showing ( folding tracing paper). I want this model to be like a real house but also contains some interesting geometric elements. Such as the geometric cutouts that allows the interior space to interact with the exterior environment. This model making has a difficulty of holding the weight by the thin pole in the middle. However, I have changed some of the elements enable the models’ presentation. for example, adding a plane to hold up the roofing thereby spread out the weight.

WEEK 9: STATEMENT

Lighting area

Experimenting area of lighting as light and shadow can create a different sense of the atmosphere in a building. Throughout my process, I tried to explore different materials to create geometric shapes and experiment lighting in them. In the model above, the hollow designs that bring the light into the interior were further developed through cutting and folding techniques to elevated in area of lighting. When a model with more lighting, it increases vitality and is more welcoming. And a model with a small area of lighting has a sense of security. The model above is with linear lighting in closely ordered, which remains vitality while adds a sense of security as it is not completely open wide.
